Look I don't think academia is a perfect job, and I have regrets, but you're being kind of silly. There are definite positives! Very high levels of job security, extreme schedule flexibility, can basically get away with working about 500 hours a year if you want after tenure, which you can get in your 30s. That's not bad.
The avarice of people who complain about econ academia salaries is really bizarre to me. Just consult on the side if you're so broke!
It's a useless job. No contribution to society other than being high school teacher for undergrads.
