   Look I don't think academia is a perfect job, and I have regrets, but you're being kind of silly. There are definite positives! Very high levels of job security, extreme schedule flexibility, can basically get away with working about 500 hours a year if you want after tenure, which you can get in your 30s. That's not bad.
   The avarice of people who complain about econ academia salaries is really bizarre to me. Just consult on the side if you're so broke!

   It's a useless job. No contribution to society other than being high school teacher for undergrads.

    I'd mostly concur except there are no grad students here. I'm kinda worried about point #5. I'd like a golden parachute at some point.

    I object to the premise of your question, as I am in academia but do not think it is the best job ever.

    It's fine. I'm at a very nonselective teaching school. I make 120/yr, can boost it another 20ish with extra teaching. I have tons of flexibility, which as I divest myself of administrative/service responsibilities I'm sure I'll enjoy. With little kids, it's nice to be able to walk them to school, pick them up when needed, and generally not be stressed about time.

    I'm reskilling to look for a private sector job once the kids are both in school and less excited about time with parents. I'd probably like it better if I made less money but worked at a selective LAC (at least I think I would), but it is what it is. Maybe it's just a grass is greener thing, but I think I would love the job if I worked with smart kids all day.

    From whom? There's nothing out there for free (uh, this is a forum for economists isn't it?) You pay a price for whatever it is you think you get out of going to become a hedge funder. For some people that's worth it, for others it isn't.
