"Not a treatment effect of academia"
Would you feel better to know that mentally chill people self-select into academia? Great! That should make us feel better to know we're positively selected on lunacy.
Look I don't think academia is a perfect job, and I have regrets, but you're being kind of silly. There are definite positives! Very high levels of job security, extreme schedule flexibility, can basically get away with working about 500 hours a year if you want after tenure, which you can get in your 30s. That's not bad.
The avarice of people who complain about econ academia salaries is really bizarre to me. Just consult on the side if you're so broke!
