In the Soviet Union, it was always known that anything coming from the government was to be treated with deep suspicion. It's one reason why cynicism is now so deeply embedded in the Russian culture, and in other post-Soviet states.
However, it seems like the Chinese will buy whatever Xi is selling. Hong Kong protests are run by the West, Uighurs are terrorists, Tibetans are illegitimate separatists. Why don't these people question the state line?
