Post I use R exclusively in industry (aside from SQL for database work). It can do everything for analytics, but not great for software engineering as I understand it (don't want to fly in a plane programmed in R). If you're in a company that has a lot of former PhDs/ subject matter experts, you will likely use R. If you are in a company with an engineering culture, or if you get big enough to bring in someone to overhaul your data processes from an engineering standpoint, you will likely switch to python.
