They are just not creative. Good in solving prelim questions. Bad in research. Simple as that.
Why is job market so bad for Asian Males?

They generally have several disadvantages vs white males wrt language and cultural differences while getting the same zero boost from DEI. There is also a mismatch between what they tend to be good at (quantitative/analytical problem solving) and what is valued in academic econ (basically putting out something new and exciting that people can write lots of papers about).

On the industry side I think it mostly comes down to 1) spoken English language fluency and accent, and 2) a pattern of failing to respond to the questions I actually ask in interviews, rather than just spouting things that sound related. A single sentence answer that communicates understanding of the question I actually asked is a much better answer than a 5 min detailed monologue on assorted related topics about which you are highly knowledgeable. That approach may get you partial credit on exams, but in an interview it weeds you out in round 1.
