   Don't be racist. The problem is not people of color. It is the system than marginalizes them and strips them of any chances for quality life.
   People who really bother me are the self-entitled individuals who can't see past the size of their paycheck and consider all other countries '3rd world' and 'dysfunctional'. And US is full of those. Funny enough, many of them haven't lived in any other country to be able to compare :)

   Moreover, US cities are mostly populated by a black and brown underclass except some pockets of wealth. Does Johannesburg or Mexico City sound like great destinations to you?

   Lol the US is the best country in the world for minorities. In one generation you can become rich, people of color do it all the time. It doesn’t happen in Europe. In Europe you don’t have kids of immigrants becoming millionaires routinely

   We clearly do not deserve our top 5s, in London Paris Stockholm Zurich Milan etc. if we are irrational enough to stay here instead of going to Ithaca, Durham, or Madison.
   OP, you were probably trolling. But since you are an economist (?), ask yourself this question: what US department is the equivalent of one of the very top European departments (say we even ignore LSE which is an outlier and competes with the very best).
   You'll be surprised to find out that the answer is some place in the top 10-15 range. I know a bunch of very good people who would not or did not move to places like BU, Brown, Duke, Cornell, etc.

   I remember reading on EJMR months ago about someone who presented at a conference in Bocconi, and some random associate prof made very good and astute criticisms of his paper. He was shocked because he 1) didn't know who this person was, and 2) didn't receive this type of constructive criticism back in the States. Now, granted Bocconi is the very best of Italy, we could say that it's much better in retaining local talent than random MRMs in Europe. But evenso it simply says that locational preferences can be very important to people who might want to eliminate worries about not adjusting well to US culture or daily communication in a language they aren't comfortable in. And the issue of family, which others have mentioned. Without all these worries, people can concentrate on their research in a familiar environment with coauthors they're used to working with.

   For me even if the US would be much better I wouldn’t see a reason to move there, not even to a very top place. I like it here, my family is close, my friends, my wife’s family and her friends, my sport club, i like the food even though there may be places with better food and I speak the language perfectly which is important because even nuances matter when you’re expressing yourself.

   I'm always confused as to what people mean by culture. LA is more ethnically diverse than any city you mentioned except maybe NYC, and produces more culture than any except NYC. Is culture a philaharmonic society?

   I am always confused by what people mean by culture because they never take advantage of the fantastic culture available to them in Europe. Art galleries? opera? Plays? nope, nope nope. They never go. Maybe value of just knowing it is there? I think when they say culture = hanging out with people like you.

   This. Europeans believe there is something called culture that only an authorized club of individuals produces. It's tautological: as culture is only in Europe, therefore it's only in Europe.

    OP those top 5s are most likely produced by some paper mill using sought after EU government data. Not enough to land an R1 job in the US, where most departments see trough this.

    It is a great way for US researchers to get data, though you often need to coauthor with one of these LRMs for access. They get a top 5, you get some data.

    (Just try to stay away from some of their inept colleagues, and don’t be fooled by a full professor title - they grant tenure for being able to publish a regression in the Scandinavian journal of economics over there...)

    Nordic bro here, not even native.

    First, students are idi.it’s and generally overestimate the ability of seasoned scholars to move. Many stuck in non top places co authored top publications, which has little value.

    I personally have a few tops without well known seniors. I have had a few offers from Asia and US in the past. I am European and would rather shoot myself than live in the US. Even if it means giving up almost 100k USD.
    

    Fresh phd this year. Checking the webpages of some euro schools. Shocking to see so many ppl with top-5 (sometimes more than one) stuck in europe lrm, especially some of the less known nordic places.
    Why don't they choose to go to the US? Mainly family reason? I think with one top 5 and a couple of field tops, it won't be difficult to generate tenured offers from top 100-150s.

    I think that patriotism / family are the real reasons but rarely mentioned. Economists are quantitative. We compare things. In most ways the US will strictly dominate in quantitative comparisons. However, once you immigrate to the US your family is lost to you largely forever. Your culture, i.e. your language / national belonging also will disappear in the next generation in all likelihood.

    I am amazed that you are the only one mentioning this, which for me is the main reason of being in Europe. Many people in academia seem to have an adoration for multiculturalism/cosmopolitanism and seem to find it cool to look down on anything "national". But that is far from all. Many of us are not ashamed of our roots, and cherish living in our homeland, surrounded by people who share our culture.

    OP assumes all those people *could* get jobs in the US. Many could. Some could not.

    -- a few have Top 5s nobody respects

    -- a few have the nasty prejudices that create conflict in the US but are tolerated in Europe. There is a guy in one of the places mentioned here who seriously hates women. That has blocked him from jobs in the US
