And stand up to China's bullying?
Unlike the USA, Japan can focus solely on China. This is a real problem for China's emergence.

They did. Considerably more than the Germans did, in fact. In the Korean case, the individual victims never saw a cent because the Korean government at the time pocketed the money, but that’s not Japan’s fault.

They've already done a lot. They should wait for China to account for all of their atrocities. Not fake ones like the conspiracy theory that they created the coronavirus. Real atrocities and human right abuses that are happening right now. Provable crimes against humanity that can be proven.

If they continue their immigration restrictions rather than continuing to loosen them, Japan will become a very cosy and beautiful retirement home until things turn around and their people start having kids again. America and Western Europe will not be so fortunate due to demographic reasons, welfarism, and the general lack of respect people have for each other.

Basically this. Japan is a well-run country with good productivity growth, a solid education system and modern infrastructure (sorry, US bros if you have to look up that phrase). It'll be fine, but thanks for asking, OP. As for defense, all we have to do is deter the Chinese invading which is something they mostly don't want to do anyhow.

Japan is around 125m. China is 1400m of equally high IQ pop and it is the manufacturing center of the world. It's a monoethnic giant with a large diaspora where people can get hi-tech products for a fraction of the cost elsewhere. It has a secretive and opaque government that is very hard to infiltrate, with little incentive to be disloyal and big punishment. It has huge highly developed concentrated metropolises and enough rural population to sustain growth. How on earth is Japan going to stop China? I doubt even the US can.

I am not a fan of China, but everyone else blew the chance to stop it. Sadly, the second half of the 21st century will consist of China pushing everyone else around, and we will live to see it.

I'd argue it's not quite this simple. Japan relies on trade, if China wants something from Japan (i.e. a favorable trade deal, or a "join venture" with China having a majority) and they don't comply, China could come up with a BS reason to restrict trade.

If Japan had a strong military China wouldn't be able to do this as easily.

The US abandons all its allies. It simply uses them for temporary goals, and then hang them to dry in the wind. Ask Georgia and Ukraine how it is to be US "allies". And this was at a time when the US was a lot more influential and capable than today.

Also, when you make foreign policy decisions of this sort, you make them with the long-term prospects in mind.

Long-term, the US will always abandon you.

Of course China will be the biggest power (though it is facing its own demographic slump), but it will never dominate the globe in the way US did post-war and even then the US had a limited ability to boss the world. So it will be with China. Nobody will interfere if they grab land and resources from Cambodia or Myanmar but size, distance and cooperation will stop them from doing significant damage to most of the world (including Japan).
