There's 2 other nuclear powers right next door: North Korea and Russia. Neither of which are going to be very friendly to Japan.
Nor can I see what Japan would have to gain by antagonizing China, other than serving its US masters.
I'd hope Japan is smarter than that, and realize which way the wind is blowing.

Their ruling elite is beginning to loosen immigration laws and a non trivial part of their young male population are stuck playing (high quality) games in their parents home for life.
At this point, I fear America may have broke Japan to the extent it did Western Europe.

Huh? GDP has been growing as fast as the UK, faster than France and especially Italy, somewhat slower than Germany but slower than the U.S.

If they continue their immigration restrictions rather than continuing to loosen them, Japan will become a very cosy and beautiful retirement home until things turn around and their people start having kids again. America and Western Europe will not be so fortunate due to demographic reasons, welfarism, and the general lack of respect people have for each other.
