   Thanks for the response.
   Has anyone here used the openigo services? They have a professional looking website and the panel is quite accomplished. But I'm not able to find any testimonials online. The free ebook is pretty good though.

   I considered that last year, but I found enough free material online to feel that I was preparing well already. I spoke with quite a lot of YPs from previous cohorts, and that was super useful!

   Thanks. How did you manage to connect with them? Were you working with the WB in some other capacity at the time?
   Also, are the applications viewed on a rolling basis? Does someone who applies earlier have an advantage?

   What is the profile of the newly hired YP cohort? The newly hired YP cohort comprises of 56 YPs joining in September 2019 and includes most PhD holders (70%). They have an average of six years of experience. The 56 YPs come from 33 different countries, out of which (there are) 8 Sub-Saharan African countries. Fifty two percent are women.

   I am an incoming 2019 YPP cohort..I used the free book, and quite frankly it was very sufficient. My personal opinion is that you should concentrate on every phase as they come. Phase 1 and 2: Make sure you are qualified and submit all the documents to ensure you move to the second round, more importantly do your best to write impeccable essays, Cvs, and recommendations to get you to the interview rounds which will take place in Washington DC in October or Paris/Dakar in November/October 2019. Phase 3: Make sure you Ace the interview and Assessment Center but in particular the interview. Note that you can fail Assessment Center and pass Interview and get an offer but vice versa is not possible. If you fail the interview you will NOT get an offer. Phase 4: Try your best to distinguish yourself to get an LOI by emphasizing the Bank's business needs particularly in operations and project management.

Should we be very specific about the geography and a challenge that can be addressed leveraging the support of the WB, or is it more of a personal motivation letter, sort of a cover letter? The sample essay I read is of the latter type, and I felt that it does not do justice to the nature of the question.

   As per the World Bank YPP website the application cycle ends on June 30th, better get your recommendations ready.

    I would look at the Q & A live sessions of previous years, they answer all your questions!

    No. You will be asked for them at a later date if you pass the first round. You will have 2 weeks to submit them

    Is it true that the YPP only accepts those who worked at the bank earlier? Most profiles I found on LinkedIn are from US colleges with an experience of working at the bank. If this is an operations focused role, shouldn't they be more open about selecting people who worked in different industries and have skills that are relevant for managing their projects? I am also a PhD and I don't see PhDs being any better at managing projects than a guy with a masters and a few years of industry experience.

    No, YPP accepts many people who haven't worked at the Bank. No, YPP does not only accept people from US schools, there is a great number of people accepted from European Universities and top schools in other continents. During my assessment center and interview in Paris we even had candidates who attended local universities in Africa and Asia. Though I should note the YPP is an international recruitment position hence you have to exhibit a global perspective and understanding even if you attended a local university. Thus the great majority (but not all) end up coming from internationally competitive schools that provide students with a global mindset.

    Well yeah, obviously 100% of the people they hire haven't worked at the bank before, but I'd say at least 90% have some relationship with the bank one way or another. So if you're an outsider your chances are > 0 but very slim...

    Well yeah, obviously 100% of the people they hire haven't worked at the bank before, but I'd say at least 90% have some relationship with the bank one way or another. So if you're an outsider your chances are > 0 but very slim...

    I interviewed in Paris this January and can assert that none of my squad of 12 had any work/relationship with the World Bank. One was working for a central Bank in Asia, another was working for the ministry of finance in an African country, and a great number were working in various organizations in Europe/Middle East from the WTO, to the EU to various private sector companies. Arguably those who interview in DC probably have a higher percentage of World Bank consultants but not 90% that number is astronomically exaggerated.

Hence I would highly encourage you all to go over the YPP process in detail (watch previous live sessions,check out Open IGO: http://www.openigo.com/worldbankypp/) to increase your chances of being selected to the second round. Don't pay attention to the pessimist on this forum, their only goal is to discourage you. I am a male (Non-PHD) from a developed economy with no previous relationship at the WB yet was able to get an offer this year.

    I am happy for you, but you are not representative. Just don't want people to be disappointed or to think it's a fair process. As I said, ask around and you will see most people were short term consultants or working there already as analysts.
