Can i apply if I was born in March 1987?
Unfortunately no, you have to be born after October 1st 1987. WB is very strict on the date of birth unlike the IMF where they offer a little flexibility for the EPs if its within a few months of the age limit requirement.
The topic of essay is out there.. Check the official websiteThe topic is not yet out there. The topic will be posted on June 1st. The official website has the topic for the 2019 YPP.
the topic of the essay can be available before June 1st, it was the case last year, the topic was available more than one month before the beginning of application.
New topic has been announced. Uou cam check the official website
Thanks, I just checked on the website as well. This year the application period is only open for one month. It seems that they are going to be running ahead of schedule. In previous years interview were November-January, this year its October-December.
Hi everyone,
This is the first time I'm posting on this forum. I'm finishing up an engineering PhD (focusing on renewable energy development) and an MBA in strategic management from a good Asian university. Before starting graduate school, I worked for a corporate in a developing country, and my role involved strategic planning, customer relationship management, and product development.
I'm very keen on exploring opportunities at the World Bank because they have played a very important role in bringing technology led revolutions in renewable energy and agriculture in many developing countries, including the one I was brought up in.
Do you think I stand a chance to compete with this professional background?
Thanks.
Best regards,
Sagnik

Unlike the IMF EP which pretty much only hires PHD in Economics, the World Bank YPP is a lot more industry diverse. The WB has an Energy practice and recruits for individuals with your background every year for the YPP. I would first encourage you to look up their website in particular the energy practice unit and read check out this site that has a tone of great information to prepare you for the YPP application: https://www.openigo.com/worldbankypp/
I won't make the YPP or EP age cutoffs by the time I apply. What options does an otherwise very competitive fresh phd have in the WB/IMF if they are a few years too old? Do they get paid less than the YPP/EP people? Is career progression different? What are meaningful differences in career for those who don't meet the age req?
Thanks for the response.
Has anyone here used the openigo services? They have a professional looking website and the panel is quite accomplished. But I'm not able to find any testimonials online. The free ebook is pretty good though.
I considered that last year, but I found enough free material online to feel that I was preparing well already. I spoke with quite a lot of YPs from previous cohorts, and that was super useful!

For the WB, they also hire economists through the academic job-market, for research economist positions (while the YPP positions are typically in projects and operations). But they will hire much less than 50 people!
There are also international consultancy positions. They are typically short term, but in some cases they can be 2 years. These are very much project specific, so for those I think it is super important that your profile fits very well with the job call. A friend of mine just completed his PhD and accepted a 2 years consultancy position in DC. These positions work as entry positions too, but - from what I understood speaking with insiders - scaling up the ladder will take longer time.
