It is more difficult to sell his idea of massive fiscal austerity in the US. That's why he's going back home.
Zucman leaving Berkeley. Headed to PSE

He isn’t going anywhere, lol. Calm down, jelly LRM bros.
—BerkeleybroWhy? Do you think Kariv or anyone else really cares for him? Berkeley is supposed to be a hard mathy big gov serious Econ department. Zucman does social policy and activism by using statistics. Not a good fit.

Something that he might not like is that it would decrease his stature / relevance in the eyes of the U.S. media, and he seems to like the spotlight that he's been getting the last two years or so.
He’s done in the US. Only his echo chamber takes him seriously. He’s get better pull in Europe.

You say this, but if it's true (I don't have a good sense myself and EJMR certainly isn't representative), it's only true among other academics in economics.
All the policy writers in major media read / talked about his book, he's quoted constantly, gets a lot of engagement on twitter, etc. Multiple presidential campaigns reached out to him for advice. And he seems to care about that quite a bit, rightly or wrongly.
